WestCAT looking at bus service cuts, fare hikes
Facing a shortfall of $2.5 million in the current fiscal year's budget, the Western Contra Costa Transit Authority will have to cut service and possibly increase fares, officials say.
The shortfall, in an operating budget that had been projected at just more than $9 million for fiscal 2009, is largely due to 75 percent in statewide cuts in State Transit Assistance, said WestCAT Marketing Coordinator Yvonne Morrow.
Proposed changes include service reductions on local routes as well as BART Express. The one-way, general public fare on those lines could go from $1.75 to $2. Monthly passes on local as well Lynx commuter buses to and from San Francisco would go up, too.
WestCAT expects to make the service changes in March to coincide with the opening of the relocated Hercules Transit Center. The transit agency board will hold a public hearing Jan. 15 at Pinole City Hall; the public is invited to share comments at the meeting or to send written comments beforehand.
WestCAT runs local routes in West Contra Costa north of Richmond's Hilltop area; express buses between Hercules and the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station and between Martinez and Del Norte BART via Highway 4 and Interstate 80
